Steve VanderStaay is a teaching and learning specialist at Western Washington University, where he teaches courses in literature, linguistics, and teaching methods. His publications include documentary studies as well as research on reading, culturally responsive instruction, college success, and teaching for social justice. As Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, Steve oversaw Western’s academic first-year programs and student success initiatives for more than 12 years. His research and teaching has been recognized with grants and awards from the National Science Foundation, the National Academy of Education, and his university. He has taught new college students for more than 30 years.
