Description
Ethics in International Affairs brings together an international and interdisciplinary cast of scholars to address the major issues in international ethics. Touching on theoretical debates and examining engaging case studies, this volume looks at issues of morality and international affairs, just war theory, terrorism, political violence, humanitarian intervention, and global distributive justice. Cases include the Persian Gulf War; the use of chemical weapons in Vietnam; terrorism in Northern Ireland and the Middle East; intervention in civil conflicts in Africa; Germany's recognition of Slovenia and Croatia; the moral duties of multinationals; and the fate of the New International Economic Order. Reccomended for general collections on international affairs.
Choice Reviews
-
All of the essays in the book are good. This is a welcome addition to a growing corpus and I would recommend it to all interested in these questions.
International Affairs
-
This thoughtful collection of essays moves beyond the skeptical question of whether morality applies internationally, asking how it applies and engaging in moral reasoning about particular cases. Taken individually the sections are well constructed. Taken as a whole the sections follow a nice thematic progression.
Ethics: An International Journal of Social, Political, and Legal Philosophy
-
This book will work excellently as an introductory text in international ethics, and it also provides a rich array of perspectives for researchers as well as policymakers.
Journal of Peace Research
-
The book's approach suggests that moral imperatives can and should play a role in international relations. The contributors are singularly aware that the answers are not simple; that terms such as 'just war,' 'humanitarian intervention,' and 'distributive justice' need and deserve greater attention and more precise definition. . . . (T)he articles in this volume should instigate some serious rethinking about the entire range of issues contained in the study of international relations and, perhaps, even give rise to a cautious but hopeful optimism.
