Historical Dictionary of Ancient Egypt, Third Edition covers the whole range of the history of ancient Egypt from the Prehistoric Period until the end of Roman rule in Egypt based on the latest information provided by academic scholars and archaeologists. This is done through a revised introduction on the history of ancient Egypt, the dictionary section has over 1,000 dictionary entries on historical figures, geographical locations, important institutions and other facets of ancient Egyptian civilization. This is followed by two appendices one of which is a chronological table of Egyptian rulers and governors and the other a list of all known museums which contain ancient Egyptian objects. The volume ends with a detailed bibliography of Egyptian historical periods, archaeological sites, general topics such as pyramids, languages and arts and crafts and the publications of Egyptian material in museums throughout the world.

Bierbrier takes his third crack at this historical dictionary since 1999. This new edition includes over 1,000 entries covering major people, places, art, architecture, culture, religion, and other subjects from over three millennia of Ancient Egyptian history. It also includes a general chronology, more than 20 illustrations, an extensive dynastic list, 40 pages of international museums with Egyptian collections, and a lengthy bibliography broken into dozens of topics. The edition under review has new entries, and some existing entries have been corrected or updated to reflect new archaeological discoveries and understandings of Ancient Egyptian history. Libraries not owning any previous editions or only the first should strongly consider acquiring the third edition as it has changed significantly. Libraries already owning the second should weigh the value of the new edition’s moderate expansion before purchasing unless they collect for an Egyptology program or otherwise endeavor to comprehensively acquire books on Ancient Egypt. Recommended. With reservations. General readers through faculty.
