Description
This book explores the recent rise of African Pentecostalism and its rejuvenation of the Protestant-Evangelical minority religion in a secular and liberal (Flemish) Belgium. Beginning with an overview of developments within African Pentecostalism, the author discusses how, after arriving in Belgium African Pentecostals are using pneumatic mission theologies to establish 'migrant churches' that interculturally engage the needs of the African diaspora in a secular Flemish Belgium. The author argues that, despite their position of marginality, followers of African Pentecostalism have attempted to dialogue with a heterogeneously diverse minority Protestant-Evangelicalism through implementing a myriad of liturgical practices reflective of the African Christian imagination. By deploying Pentecostal mission theologies, the author pivots the intercultural contributions that African Pentecostalism makes towards solidifying peaceful coexistence, respect, and dialogue in a secular, plural, and liberal (Flemish) Belgium.

In a time of rising anti-immigrant sentiments across Europe, this book offers a compelling call to deepen our understanding of African Pentecostal immigrant Christians and conceive them as new participants in the Missio Dei. Bangura addresses this need by portraying a detailed story of the lived religion of African Pentecostal communities that are part of the Protestant-Evangelical minority in Catholic Belgium (Flanders). By critically engaging with and challenging dominant Western assumptions and methodologies, this book invites the reader to take serious the voices that are emerging out of the margins and that are reshaping and revitalizing the ecclesiological landscape in today's secular context.

The rise of African Christian immigrant communities and churches in Europe raises myriad questions related to intercultural engagement, ecclesial relations, missiological significance, and more. The extraordinary nature of the phenomenon complicates analysis and exposes the limitations of Western missionary models. In African Pentecostalism in Catholic Belgium, Bangura utilizes a World Christianity framework to probe the phenomenon's central paradox as a major strand of global Christianity engaged in mission as a religious, social, and ecclesial minority. The assessment, which pairs the study of lived religion with an intercultural theology approach, eschews the dismissive or triumphalist appraisals of the African Christian migrant movements common within the discourse. Bangura incorporates diligent fieldwork and scrupulous attention to the multifaceted dimensions of this African Christian migrant movement as it navigates a new frontier of missional and ecclesial engagement in a broadly secular context. He makes a persuasive case for an intercultural theological encounter in which missional engagement requires transformation on all sides.
