Biography
Paul Stangl is an amateur cook and seafood enthusiast, who enjoys exploring seafood markets, restaurants and cookbooks. Stangl is currently associate professor of urban planning and sustainable development at College of the Environment, Western Washington University. He is the author of Risen from Ruins (Stanford University Press, 2018), which examines the cultural politics of East Berlin’s reconstruction following the Second World War. His research and publications on San Francisco include an investigation of nineteenth-century “evil” octopuses that appeared in Journal of Interdisciplinary Literary Studies. Articles on San Francisco cinema have appeared in Journal of Urban Cultural Studies and California Geographer. He has also written about early efforts to regulate the location of slaughterhouses in San Francisco.
