Tirso de Molina (1580-1648) ranks alongside Lope de Vega and Calderon as one of the greatest playwrights of Spain's Golden Age. He was a prolific writer whose plays range from high-spirited comedies to plays based on serious Old Testament stories. He was noted both for his malicious wit and his mastery of historical interpretation.
