Through expansion on the Communication Theory of Identity, author Kelly M. Weikle demonstrates how messages, relational ties, and social expectations and ideologies all influence identity tensions as women experience postpartum depression and motherhood. These tensions and challenges can manifest through a number of health crises, including extreme anxiety and obsessions, intrusive thoughts of escape, bouts of insomnia, and intense feelings of overwhelm and maternal failure.
