Description
Selected by Choice as an Outstanding Academic Book for 1992. In this landmark study, two eminent geographers present the first comparative, cross-national analysis of emergency evacuations engendered by every sort of disaster: military, natural, and industrial. Zelinsky and Kosinski have selected 27 evacuations of cities due to actual or anticipated emergencies during the past fifty years, from the Ohio River Flood of 1937 to the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986.

Reviews
-
The chapter on war-related evacuations is virtually a book-within-a-book....This chapter will long stand as the single most concise and easily accessible account of the mass exodus from cities in Europe and Japan....^RThe Emergency Evacuation of Cities^I is a significant contribution to the evacuation literature and should assume a place on the shelves of emergency planners and academics.

A pioneering work in disaster research and social geography....The nontechnical approach and lively writing style make the volume especially accessible, and the authors support their work with numerous tables, diagrams, and maps....Highly recommended as a basic social science holding that will also greatly interest planners and policy scientists.
