Description
In India, domestic workers-predominantly women-remain largely unorganized and excluded from policy-making on social and labor issues. Since their workplace is the private home of the employer, regulating working conditions poses significant practical challenges.
This lack of formal oversight severely impacts their living conditions, quality of life, and fundamental human rights.
Existing research on domestic workers has primarily focused on labor rights, with microlevel studies limited to specific locations or ethnographic explorations of social relations and everyday struggles. However, there remains a critical need to expand the discourse by examining their quality of life, working conditions, and occupational health concerns. Additionally, large-scale cross-sectional studies-drawing samples from diverse
states-are essential for comparative insights that can inform policy. Addressing this gap, this book presents findings from a study conducted across three states: Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Mizoram. It delves into women domestic workers' working and living conditions, quality of life, occupational health, healthcare access, and
experiences of sexual harassment-contextualizing these issues within a framework of human dignity and rights. Through rich empirical data, the book offers valuable insights into their lived experiences, shedding light on systemic challenges and potential pathways for reform.
By advocating for decent working conditions and labor rights, the book proposes pragmatic solutions to address quality of life, occupational health, and dignity-based concerns. It also examines the necessity of formalizing domestic work, along with the challenges involved
