Description
This book provides the most comprehensive study to date of political and social developments in Montenegro from the processes that led to the disintegration of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to Montenegro's eventful trajectory towards independence and, later, towards Euro-Atlantic integration. Kenneth Morrison draws upon an extensive range of primary and secondary sources to illuminate the key developments in Montenegro during three decades characterised by political, social and economic flux. Beginning with the 'happening of the people' in 1988 and concluding with a detailed analysis of political developments in the first decade since Montenegro gained its independence, the author addresses the themes of nationalism, identity, statehood and the party political dynamics in both the Montenegrin and the wider Southeast European context.

Reviews
-
Morrison impresses the reader repeatedly with his profound expertise and perceptive reading of evidence. His extremely well-informed and comprehensive account of Montenegro's political history gains additional complexity as he develops on the interrelations between politics, religious communities, national minorities, the media, and the international community. He has researched his project thoroughly in a wide range of source material and a wealth of scholarship in history and the social sciences. The book can be recommended in the strongest terms to anyone interested in the formation of the Montenegrin state and nationhood.

Nationalism, Identity and Statehood has sealed Morrison's reputation as one of the leading academic authorities on contemporary Montenegro and the wider western Balkans. Scholars of the region's history and politics will ?nd the extensive level of research that draws upon a broad array of primary and secondary source material to be an invaluable resource that is still refreshingly accessible to non-specialists. To this end, this book currently stands as the de?nitive account of Montenegro's cultural, economic and political re-emergence as a modern nation-state.
European History Quarterly
-
An exceptionally well-researched, well-written and fair-minded analysis of the trajectory of recent events in a small, but important, Balkan land that is all too often overlooked by regional pundits. This is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand developments in the Land of the Black Mountain.
John D. Treadway, Emeritus Professor of History and International Studies, University of Richmond, USA
-
An extensively researched, comprehensive and detailed account of both Montenegro's tortured path to separation from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the balance sheet of its first decade of recovered independence. As the foremost expert on contemporary Montenegrin politics in the English-speaking world, Morrison makes sense of every twist and turn in the recent history of Montenegro. This is a work that will repay close reading by all scholars in the field.
Elizabeth Roberts, author of The Realm of the Black Mountain: A History of Montenegro
