Biography

The publishing house of Adam and Charles Black (A&C Black) was founded in 1807 when Adam Black opened his own bookshop in Edinburgh, before moving from Scotland to London in 1889. A&C Black is perhaps most famous for its publication of Who’s Who since 1897. Who's Who began life in 1849, growing from thirty-nine lists of ranks and appointments, and the names of those holding them, to the annual biographical work it remains today. A&C Black was purchased by Bloomsbury Publishing plc in 2000.
