Wayne McGregor

Biography

Sir Wayne McGregor CBE is a multi-award-winning British choreographer and director. He is Artistic Director of Studio Wayne McGregor, encompassing creative collaborations in dance, film, music, visual art, technology and science; a touring company of dancers Company Wayne McGregor; and learning and research programmes. Wayne McGregor is also Resident Choreographer at The Royal Ballet, Director of Dance for the Venice Biennale, and is regularly commissioned by and has works in the repertories of the most important dance companies around the world. In total, he has created more than 40 ballets, most recently MaddAddam with Margaret Atwood, worked on films including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Fantastic Beasts, Sing, Mary Queen of Scots and The Outrun, as well as on music videos with Radiohead and Chemical Brothers. He has held positions as Research Fellow at the Department of Experimental Psychology at Cambridge, and Innovator in Residence at the University of California, San Diego. He has ongoing artificial intelligence, virtual reality and robotics projects with Google, HKBU and Random International, and in 2026 will begin new fellowships at Oxford and Brown Universities. His major exhibition on physical intelligence, Infinite Bodies, opens at Somerset House in London in October 2025, and will move to The Shed in Hudson Yards in fall 2026. His TED talk on physical thinking has been viewed almost 1.3 million times. He has been interviewed in the New York Times, Financial Times and many other publications, and appeared on numerous television and radio shows. He holds speaking invitations for the next couple of years from Davos, SXSW, NYU Tech Forum and Wired Live, among others. His show ABBA Voyage, featuring avatars of the original ABBA members choreographed and motion sequenced by Wayne/Studio Wayne McGregor, has reached a live audience of 2.5 million to date and is now franchised worldwide. McGregor is Professor of Choreography at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, has Honorary Doctorates from The Royal College of Art London, Plymouth University, University of Leeds, University of Chester, and UAL, and is an Honorary Fellow of the British Science Association. He has won four Critics' Circle National Dance Awards, two Time Out Awards, three South Bank Show Awards, three Olivier Awards, a Prix Benois de la Danse and two Golden Mask Awards. In 2011 McGregor was awarded a CBE for Services to Dance and in 2021 was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Prix de Lausanne. His Majesty The King Charles III awarded Wayne McGregor a Knighthood in the 2024 Birthday Honours List.
