Peter's book, in which everyone from best John Wayne to Leni Riefenstahl turns up, is enjoyed and indeed substantially enriched while listening to Elmer's music … The portrait he draws of his father is fond, admiring, and complex.

Elmer Bernstein composed the scores to awful movies (Robot Monster, 1953), expensive movies (The Ten Commandments, 1956), and classic movies (The Great Escape, 1963; Ghostbusters, 1984), but in this new biography we learn about Bernstein, the man. Written by his son Peter, using original interviews, oral histories, and personal ephemera, the book is neither tribute nor hagiography. Instead, it's the story of a man's life: its highs (though he won but one Oscar, he's the only person to have been nominated in five straight decades), its lows (he was blacklisted in the 1950s), and the ordinary stuff in between. The author isn't a professional biographer and this is a good thing. The book's informal, conversational writing style makes it feel authentic and personal, as though it's intended simply as a book about an interesting person, told by someone who knew him. The Magnificent Elmer (2014), cowritten by Bernstein's second wife, Pearl, covers some of the same ground, but it's very hard to find. Consider this new book the standard Bernstein biography.

His work earned 14 Academy Award nominations (winning one for Thoroughly Modern Millie) and two Tony nominations. Bernstein once said, “Music is the soul of life, yet each soul sings its own song,” and as this biography makes clear, he was a soul with many songs. Anyone who enjoys music, movies, or music in the movies will find much to sing about in this thoughtful and well-written biography.
