'...an important book. [...] The picture of Mauriac which emerges is of a much more subtle, diverse and fluctuating mind than might perhaps be expected.'AUMLA

This is an unpretentious, well-produced, largely very readable volume. Given the variety of the material, different readers will inevitably find the interest of individual contributions variable. But all the essays are marked by that close attention to text which is the hallmark of the best Anglo-Saxon literary criticism, and many of them suggest fruitful openings for further study.
