Description
Historical Dictionary of Guinea, Sixth Edition contains 70 new entries, an updated bibliography, extensive updates to the chronology to cover the many events that occurred since the last edition.
Those events include:
· Reelection of President Alpha Condé in 2015 against a background of ethnic violence and police brutality that further deepened and widened the ethnopolitical division that Guinea had been grappling with.
· The revelation, in 2016, by national and international media of a massive corruption of the Condé government by the Rio Tinto mining corporation in exchange for mining rights in the Simandou mines unleashed widespread discontent and mass protests across the country and impacted Guinea's bauxite industry.
In 2019-2020, President Alpha Condé's party and its Coalition Arc-en-ciel (Rainbow Coalition) sponsored a deeply faulty referendum that they used to amend the Guinean Constitution, eliminate the presidential term limit and enable him to run for a third term. As a result, he was “reelected” in 2020 in the midst of nationwide unrests. COVID-19 and its effect on the country. In September 2021, against the background of government in-fighting and mounting discord inside the national defense forces, a junta of the Special Forces led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya took over after overthrowing Alpha Condé.
