Description
This book reframes the study of religion by placing the body at the center of theory.
It argues that “embodied theories” and the modern category of religion co-produce one another through classificatory acts that adhere to bodies and authorize knowledge. Rather than choosing between material religion's focus on sensation and poststructural accounts of power and performativity, the book treats the body as a medium that translates between being and knowing. Translation is not a neutral transfer but a generative process through which meanings, boundaries, and “religion” itself are made. Across chapters on intersectionality, standpoint and whiteness, queer and cuír theory, crip and mad studies, and trans theory, the book traces counter-genealogies that provincialize secular frames and show how bodies become intelligible within regimes of religion, race, gender, and ability. It advances a method of responsibility: taking bodies and theories seriously by situating them historically and politically, and by exposing how names like “religion” acquire force when they stick to some bodies and not others. The result is a program for religious studies that is rigorously theoretical and insistently embodied.
