This volume is still by far the most complete print bibliography we have dealing with 19th and 20th century analytical studies. It is an essential part of any post-secondary music collection, and will certainly be found on the work desks of most of us who work analytically with these repertoires.

Fontes Artis Musicae

This bibliography lists analyses of works of about 1,000 nineteenth and twentieth century composers. The 9,306 analyses, listed alphabetically by composer, are in French, English, German, Italian, and other European languages, and are drawn from periodicals, theses, dissertations, and monographs. It incorporates the entire content of Arthur Wenk's Analyses of Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Music, 1940-1985 , extending the list to the year 2000. Writings included examine form, harmony, melody, rhythm, and other structural aspects of music; they do not refer to jazz, popular music, or world music. An author index is provided. Hoek is the head of the music library at Northwestern U.
