Biography

Andrew Cone was named Chief Strategy Officer at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2018 after previously serving as the museum’s Director of Strategy & Planning. In his current role, he leads institutional planning and priority-setting, organizational transformation, and business development. He also oversees the Research & Analysis department, the museum's centralized resource for data analysis and audience insights. Andrew regularly speaks about both opportunities and challenges facing the arts and culture sector today, including at the Center for Curatorial Leadership and the American Alliance of Museums; partners with external organizations on research and thought leadership, including the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and Montclair State University; lectures at arts administration and museum studies graduate programs, including NYU and CUNY; and serves on grants and awards juries, including for the Joyce Foundation. He also serves as a mentor for NEW INC and CultTech, advising start-ups at the intersection of art, design, and technology, and participates in FutureMuseum, an international research project convening arts leaders, public officials, and digital innovators to reimagine the future of cultural institutions. Prior to the Whitney, Andrew worked in the private sector, advising companies on growth, marketing, and brand strategy as a consultant at McKinsey in London, WPP in Hong Kong, and Ogilvy & Mather in New York. He holds an A.B. in the History of Art & Architecture from Harvard College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School, where he was selected by his peers as the student commencement speaker. Andrew is originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, where his first museum job was as a Youth Docent at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.
