Description

Explore how GLAM institutions are navigating new leadership styles and organizational frameworks to help meet the challenges posed by a digital society.

During this time of digital transformation, libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs) are facing a generational challenge that calls on them to rethink their roles, reevaluate policies and practices, and re-envision creative management and use of their collections. To meet these digital challenges, LAM practitioners are adopting new technologies and tools, shaping new digital pedagogies and methods of outreach, and engaging diverse audiences in digital spaces that foster meaningful cultural conversations while answering calls for cultural and historical accountability and social change. For LAM institutions, the stakes are high as they navigate questions relating to cultural relevancy, resource allocations as well as contend with the major intellectual and social implications for supporting entirely new approaches to learning, scholarship, public engagement and community building.

In addition to exploring basic elements of digital leadership, this book identifies useful frameworks and organizational models to help LAMs advance digital stewardship programs, professional development initiatives, and institutional advocacy. More than organizational models and resource frameworks, this book explores how digital leadership effects the ways in which people work, think, and interact. What are the most effective components/elements of digital leadership for LAMs? Digital/tech expertise? Enterprise resource planning? A change champion? A team innovator? Or, a combination of several of these attributes?

This book will:
- Offer a definition and outline basic tenets of digital leadership for LAM institutions
- Address the knowledge gap between administrators and digital practitioners by presenting some basic digital stewardship building blocks for LAM administrators
- Present a new organizational model that defines and centers “core services” for digital stewardship
- Consider a “people-first” framework for digital stewardship staff development
- Explore a model for digital stewardship advocacy that acknowledges and responds to the challenges of digital labor while empowering digital stewardship teams and next-generation digital leaders
