Writing for children predates AD 1000 and came into its own in the eighteenth century. Thus, this historical dictionary can draw upon a large pool of children's literature from around the world. This second edition updates the 2010 version by adding new authors (like Elizabeth Acevedo) and revising existing entries to reflect changes in the intervening years.… Entries vary in length from one paragraph (the typical length for the vast majority of entries, which cover authors and illustrators) to four pages (usually for genres), and most include cross-references. The majority of entries address European children's literature, with the U.S. next in coverage. An appendix of major children's literature awards with their awardees, an extensive bibliography, and an index complete the volume. In short, this dictionary provides a straightforward guide to hundreds of major players in children's literature.
