Description
This edition of Juvenal's Satires includes the Latin text plus an informative and lively introduction and commentary. It replaces the earlier 'red Macmillan' of E.G. Hardy (1891) and the widely used commentary of J.D. Duff (1898). A new edition was necessary for a number of reasons: much work had been done on the text; the expurgation of earlier editions was no longer felt necessary in a 'franker' age and indeed could lead to misunderstandings about the nature of Juvenal's satire; the heavily textual and philological annotation of earlier editions required the attention of a literary critical focus; and for modern students, the text needed to make its linguistic guidance and explanation of allusions clearer. Ferguson's edition is now the 'standard' student volume on the Satires.
