Description

Moss Icon have been hailed as emo pioneers. Their 1994 album Lyburnum Wits End Liberation Fly (Lyburnum) has garnered well deserved praise. Rolling Stone declared that the album “still sounds ahead of its time.” Zak Fusciello, fan-turned-Moss Icon drummer (joining the band in 2001) shares an insider/outsider's view of this enigmatic band including their history, development and impact on bands to follow.

It argues that more than being “punk” or “post-punk” or “emo,” Lyburnum is “death music.” Death music helps both the artist and listener heal from trauma and complete difficult life transitions. The song “Lyburnum Wits End Liberation Fly” is singer and lyricist's Jonathan Vance's recounting of his childhood experience of attending the funeral of his best friend. Jonathan wrote “Lyburnum” as a way of processing grief and easing his transition into the adult world with which he had become disillusioned. As the first book on Moss Icon, Fusciello's account helps fill in the gaps of post-punk music history.
