Fleeing Cuba in 1961, Jorge J. E. Gracia arrived in the USA at the age of nineteen without family and unable to speak English. Ten years later he was assistant professor of philosophy at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Over the next 50 years Gracia published dozens of books and hundreds of articles, making major contributions to numerous areas of philosophy: Latin American philosophy, race and ethnicity, Medieval philosophy, philosophical historiography, metaphysics and ontology, and theory of interpretation. This book is a critical response to Gracia’s work and a tribute to his legacy. It includes a comprehensive bibliography of Gracia’s philosophical works.

This volume is a treasure-trove: a lifetime of philosophical work and inspiration reflected in studies pursuing Gracian themes and approaches. The sheer range of topics indicates what richness lies in store for the reader.
Timothy B. Noone, The Catholic University of America
This is a well-deserved tribute to an important philosopher. Jorge Gracia was an exceptionally prolific writer who influenced many. This volume brings together former students and scholars who honor his timeless contributions to Latin American and Medieval philosophy, including relevant issues on race and ethnicity.
Vicente Medina, professor of philosophy, Seton Hall University
This volume is a worthy acknowledgement of, response to, and continuation of some of Jorge Gracia’s many seminal contributions to a broad range of philosophical topics—theoretical, historical, and cultural.
Paul Vincent Spade, Indiana University
