Description
This book will be a collection of brief case studies on foundations that raise funds and provide support to public school systems to enhance their programs and impact. It will not include parent-teacher associations (PTAs) or parent-teacher organizations (PTOs), which typically raise funds for an individual school. Rather, the foundations studied will be those that support school districts. It will not focus on individual charter schools, although some district-wide foundations do support charters as well as traditional public schools. It will not include private foundations that make grants to public schools (e.g., Gates) but rather foundations created for the specific purpose of raising funds to supplement public funding of school systems. The focus will be on the operation and impact of the foundations, rather than philanthropy more generally.

In a time when public school districts face chronic underfunding and significant budget reductions, the authors provide a vital roadmap for utilizing philanthropy to bridge critical resource gaps. Through real life case studies, they showcase how foundations can serve as essential partners, raising money to fund early literacy, STEM education, career pathways, and more that might otherwise remain out of reach for many students. It is an indispensable resource that demonstrates how strategic community investment can disrupt inequity and ensure that every child, regardless of their zip code, has access to amazing opportunities.
Dr. Nick Polyak, superintendent, author, speaker Leyden Community High School District

In Public School Education Foundations: Advancing Opportunity, Excellence, and Innovation, Michael J. Worth, Sanjay K. Pandey, and Holly Kamm Wahl offer a timely and insightful examination of the 'sleeping giant' of local education foundations and their growing power to drive innovation, equity, and community impact. Drawing from strong research and practical experience in the opening chapters, the authors clearly demonstrate how well-governed, professionally led foundations can serve as true partners in advancing student success. As Chair of the National Association of Education Foundations, I appreciate the book's emphasis on standards, accountability, and measurable impact, which reflects the daily work of our members nationwide. This book is an essential resource for anyone committed to awakening the full potential of education foundations to strengthen public schools and expand opportunity for all students.
