The book represents a timely contribution to the extant scholarly literature on the vexatious and enduring crises of human material wellbeing that have historically plagued Black and Brown communities in the United States. Undoubtedly, the insights provided by the book are quite useful for the formulation and implementation of relevant public policies that would address these crises.

This book contains a wide range of topics, utilizes a combination of methodologies, and explores underlying themes of oppression and effects of discrimination across various areas of U.S. public policy, in higher education, and local communities impacted by environmental racism, to name a few.
The book's strengths come from each author's connections to the topics they explore. The use of first-person and ethnographic accounts in some chapters highlights the intractable nature of racism and discrimination in the United States. The book provides much in delivering critical historical reports of various domestic policies that have impacted Black and Brown populations. Many chapters also offer sections on the practical implications of research findings and directions for future research. This book provides students and researchers of urban history, public policy, intersectionality, black feminist thought, race and ethnic politics, and those interested in the intersection of these concepts to disaster management, and higher education leadership with much to consider regarding the state of research in these areas.Davia C. Downey, The University of Memphis

This book provides a glimpse into the many socio economic inequities that continue to fracture and plague our society. By focusing on the outcomes of these inequities, the authors have drawn attention to the multitudinous aspects of social problems that pose challenges in black and brown communities. The informative discussions on the government’s fix it approaches through implementation of public policies, remind readers of the inadequacies in them and the need for incremental amendments. This book is a must read for students and scholars interested in public policies in a policy program. It is a source of knowledge for those individuals who would like to learn more about race relations, poverty, crimes, ongoing injustices, health disparities, and other problems that trigger societal and governmental responses through reactionary policies in a politically charged climate.
