Description
This innovative book offers a fresh approach to the history of the British Women's Liberation Movement, by focusing on the impact of the movement on the lives of the activists themselves.
Sue Bruley explores the meaning of the slogan 'the personal is political' by bringing together oral testimonies from over 150 interviews conducted across Britain, in addition to autobiographical narratives from feminist periodicals and WLM newletters. Through this rich source material, the author examines the formal and organisational aspects of the movement, and uncovers the different ways in which the movement impacted the personal lives of activists. Bruley pays due attention to the lives of black, working class, and disabled activists, and overcomes the prevalence of London in WLM historiography by using a plethora of sources from across the UK.
Arguing that consciousness-raising was a crucial element of the movement, this book demonstrates how it broke down divisions between public and private life, and created opportunities for feminist bonding and a new language of empowerment. Bruley analyses its impact upon several key aspects of identity, including interpersonal relationships and sexuality, home and family, and the body. Ultimately, Women's Liberation and Personal Life is an engaging and detailed account of the everyday impact of women's liberation and second wave feminism in Britain.

From feminist homes, peace camps, new selves and lovers, dress codes, parenting and refuges against male violence – this book ties the dreams of women's liberation to the larger arc of contemporary British history and places personal storytelling at its heart. Readable and relevant, this book is a deeply personal document of political change.

Women's Liberation in the UK is a rich, deeply researched account of the women's liberation movement as it was lived and experienced across Britain. Drawing on an exceptional range of oral histories and personal testimony, Sue Bruley reconstructs the emotional, relational and political dimensions of a movement that transformed women's lives as well as public culture. Among its strengths is the book's illumination of the dynamic networks at the heart of the movement, evident in conferences, print cultures, local groups, women's centres and friendship. This is an important work of recovery history that offers a grounded and historically precise account of how the personal became political, and an invaluable resource for scholars of feminism, social movements and modern British history.

This book vividly recovers the voices and experiences of a broad swathe of UK women who embraced women's liberation in the 1970s and 1980s. Essential reading for historians of the period, a wonderful introduction to general readers and students.
